Ten Ukrainian students were accepted by the Faculty of Environment, UJEP for the Summer |Internship (April 2 till July 31, 2022), namely: Kateryna Shandura, Anastasiia Moskovets, Sofia Malivanchuk – Institute of Biology and Medicine, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; Sofia Ivanova, Biological Faculty, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; Kateryna Okopna – Physical Faculty, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; Oleksandr Snigur- Faculty of Natural Sciences, National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy; Lahoiko Anastasiia, Faculty of Plant Protection, Biotechnology and Ecology, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv; Mariia Bondaruk and Halyna Fedoriv – Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University, Ternopil.
During Internship students were involved in the on-going at the faculty scientific projects and in parallel could continue to study online at their home university in Ukraine. Five students: Katerina Shandura, Mariia Bondaruk, Halyna Fedoriv, Sofia Ivanova and Oleksandr Snigur assisted in MiscanValue project. They participated in the establishing and maintaining of the Lab experiment with Miscanthus phytoremediation at the diesel contaminated soil supported by biochar of different origins synthesized at VSB-TUO, collecting soil samples at the Miscanthus field for the soil nematodes research and providing monitoring of bioparameters at the Miscanthus fields of 2021 and 2020 years.
An accredited course “Bioremediation and Phytoremediation” (in English) was offered to students by Dr.Trogl, prof. Pidlisniuk, Dr.Al Souki, Mgr.Ato Newton (UJEP) and the faculty member from TU-Freiberg, Germany Dr.Sabrina Hedrich. At the final stage of the course students did presentations related using of different energy crops in phytoremediation processes.
Ukrainian students have been grateful for the opportunity to stay at FZP UJEP at the Summer Internship and to participate in the international scientific project MiscanValue. Three students made a decision to continue the education at the Faculty of Environment, UJEP and will be involved in the further research of Miscanthus phytoremediation.
“During the period of practice, I actually managed to gain a lot of skills, i.e., from new plant measurement techniques to filling in data and protocols. Working with Miscanthus plant gave me a valuable experience and I hope that will soon be able to adopt this experience in my country. I participated in long-term experiment at the field in Chomutov, and was involved in planting a field with Miscanthus in Malkov. Another interesting thing was that I managed to combine a fascinating student life with the educational process and experiments. I am going home from practice under the impression!” Mariia Bondaruk, Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University.
«I would like to thank for possibility to participate in CORNET MiscanValue project, which gave me the experience of working with interesting people and professors, who became great mentors for us. It’s wonderful when study time brings not only new knowledge and skills, but also gives wise people around.
I heard earlier about Miscanthus plant and its exploitation in phytoremediation with biomass production. However, being here at UJEP, I managed to work in experiment with this plant. Everyone found a role in this project with Miscanthus, and we participated in the field and laboratory research at Chomutov”
Kateryna Shadura, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
